2.What is difference for ASTM A517 grade e steel materials and ASTM A517 grade B ?

Property A517 Grade E A517 Grade B
Standard  ASTM A517 (High-Strength Quenched & Tempered Alloy Steel)
Primary Application Heavy-duty structural components (e.g., crane booms, mining equipment) Pressure vessels, wind turbine towers
Tensile Strength ≥760 MPa (110 ksi) ≥860 MPa (125 ksi)
Yield Strength ≥690 MPa (100 ksi) ≥760 MPa (110 ksi)
Key Composition – Lower carbon (C ≤0.22%)
– Higher chromium (Cr 0.40-0.80%)
– Nickel (Ni 0.70-1.20%)
– Higher carbon (C ≤0.23%)
– Molybdenum (Mo 0.45-0.65%)
– Boron (B 0.001-0.003%)
Impact Toughness Excellent low-temperature toughness (Charpy V-notch @ -40°C) Moderate toughness (typically tested at room temp)
Weldability Requires preheat (~150°C) and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) Similar requirements but more sensitive to cracking due to boron content
Corrosion Resistance Better (due to Ni/Cr content) Standard (relies on coatings for harsh environments)
Cost Higher (alloy-intensive) More economical

3.What is A517 Grade B material? What are its main applications?

Material Type:

A517 Grade B is a quenched and tempered high-strength low-alloy steel (compliant with ASTM A517 standard).

Typical Applications:
– High-pressure vessels (e.g., hydraulic cylinders, gas storage tanks)
– Wind turbine towers
– Critical load-bearing components in engineering machinery
