What is the difference between P355GH and S355j2?

2025-08-08 | More News

P355GH and S355J2 are both structural steels, but they are used for different applications and have distinct specifications based on their properties.

Key Differences Between P355GH and S355J2

Standards and Applications:

P355GH: Defined under EN 10028-2, P355GH is primarily used in the manufacturing of pressure vessels, boilers, and piping systems that require high-temperature resistance. The “GH” stands for “Pressure Vessel Grade with good High-temperature properties,” making it suitable for applications that experience thermal stress.

S355J2: Defined under EN 10025-2, S355J2 is a structural steel grade commonly used in construction, such as bridges, buildings, and other load-bearing structures. The “J2” indicates that it has been impact-tested at -20°C, making it appropriate for applications in cold temperatures.

Chemical Composition:

P355GH: Contains slightly higher carbon content than S355J2, which helps it perform better under high temperatures but can make it less ductile and impact-resistant.

S355J2: Has a lower carbon content, improving its weldability and making it more versatile for structural applications requiring good impact resistance.

Mechanical Properties:

P355GH: Has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and is optimized for high-temperature environments in pressure vessels, but has lower toughness in cold conditions.

S355J2: Also has a yield strength of 355 MPa but is optimized for structural applications requiring impact toughness. The J2 quality means it can withstand impacts at temperatures below -20°C, making it suitable for construction in colder climates.

Impact Testing:

P355GH: Not typically required to undergo low-temperature impact testing, as it is designed for high-temperature pressure containment.

S355J2: Undergoes low-temperature impact testing (Charpy V-notch test) at -20°C to ensure toughness in structural applications under potentially low temperatures.

Summary:

P355GH is better suited for high-temperature pressure vessel and boiler applications.

S355J2 is intended for structural applications, particularly in colder climates, due to its impact-tested resilience at low temperatures.

Choosing between them will depend on whether the primary requirements are high-temperature resistance for pressure containment (P355GH) or toughness in low-temperature structural applications (S355J2).
