SA537 Class 2 for oil and gas tank

SA537 Class 2 belongs to carbon-manganese-silicon steel plates, falls under the category of pressure vessel plates, and is generally a steel plate grade specified in American standards. It has good low-temperature impact toughness and is widely used in the manufacturing of production, storage, and transportation equipment for petroleum and chemical products.

2.What are the performance advantages of SA537 class 2?

  • High strength: The SA537CL2 steel plate has high yield strength and tensile strength, which can meet the application requirements in high-pressure and high-temperature environments.
  • Good toughness: In low-temperature environments, the SA537CL2 steel plate can still maintain good toughness and is not prone to embrittlement.
  • Excellent corrosion resistance: Due to the addition of small amounts of elements such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, the SA537CL2 steel plate has good corrosion resistance.
  • Good processing performance: The SA537CL2 steel plate has good weldability and workability, facilitating cutting and processing into various shapes.

3.What are the typical applications of SA537 class 2?

SA537 CL2 steel plates are widely used in the manufacture of equipment and components operating under high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosive conditions, such as reactors, heat exchangers, separators, boiler drums in the oil, chemical, power station, and boiler industries, as well as pressure vessels for nuclear reactors in nuclear power plants.

4.What is the difference between SA537 Class 1 and Class 2?

  • Heat Treatment:
    • Class 1: It is normalized. Normalizing is a heat treatment process that involves heating the steel to a specific temperature and then allowing it to cool in air. This process refines the grain structure of the steel, improving its strength and toughness to a certain extent.
    • Class 2: It is quenched and tempered. Quenching involves rapidly cooling the steel from a high temperature by immersing it in a quenching medium such as water or oil. This results in a very hard and strong microstructure, but it also makes the steel more brittle. Tempering is then carried out to reduce the brittleness and increase the toughness by reheating the quenched steel to a lower temperature.
  • Mechanical Properties:
    • Yield Strength: For Class 1, the yield strength is 345 MPa when the thickness is less than or equal to 65 mm. For Class 2, the yield strength is 415 MPa when the thickness is less than or equal to 65 mm. So, Class 2 has a higher yield strength, which means it can withstand greater forces without deforming plastically.
    • Tensile Strength: The tensile strength of Class 1 is in the range of 485 – 620 MPa for thicknesses less than or equal to 65 mm. For Class 2, the tensile strength is in the range of 550 – 690 MPa for the same thickness range. Class 2 thus has a higher tensile strength, indicating that it can bear greater tensile forces before breaking.
    • Thickness: Class 1 plates are generally available up to a thickness of 100 mm (4 in.). Class 2 plates can be produced up to a thickness of 150 mm (6 in.), which means Class 2 has a greater thickness range and is more suitable for applications requiring thicker plates.
