SA 516 Gr. 60 Pressure Vessel Steel Plates Dispatched for Oil & Gas Project

2026-09-30 | More News

A complete batch of SA 516 Gr. 60 pressure vessel steel plates — totaling 15 pieces across two grades — has been successfully dispatched for an oil and gas pressure vessel fabrication project. All plates meet ASME II Part A 2025 Edition, NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, and EN10204 Type 3.1 certification requirements.

The shipment comprises 10 pieces of SA 516 Gr. 60 and 5 pieces of SA 516 Gr. 70 pressure vessel quality carbon steel plates, supplied in multiple thicknesses ranging from 13 mm to 75 mm. The plates are intended for fabrication into pressure-retaining components for an oil and gas processing facility, where sour service resistance and low-temperature toughness are critical design parameters.

SA 516 Gr. 60 Shipment Details: Dimensions and Quantities

The SA 516 Gr. 60 plates in this shipment cover six dimension configurations, from 13 mm to 25 mm in thickness, tailored to different pressure vessel components including shells, heads, and reinforcement pads:

No. Grade Thickness (mm) Width (mm) Length (mm) Pieces
1 SA 516 Gr. 60 25 2400 7690 4
2 SA 516 Gr. 60 25 1800 3840 1
3 SA 516 Gr. 60 25 1150 4000 2
4 SA 516 Gr. 60 16 1430 1430 1

6 SA 516 Gr. 60 13 250 1350 1
SA 516 Gr. 60 Subtotal 10

SA 516 Gr. 70 Plates Included in the Same Shipment

Five additional plates of SA 516 Gr. 70 — the higher-strength counterpart in the same ASME specification — were dispatched alongside the Gr. 60 plates for components requiring elevated tensile strength:

No. Grade Thickness (mm) Width (mm) Length (mm) Pieces
7 SA 516 Gr. 70 10 1000 2700 1
8 SA 516 Gr. 70 16 1400 2125 1
9 SA 516 Gr. 70 30 1524 4250 1
10 SA 516 Gr. 70 75 1400 2550 1
11 SA 516 Gr. 70 20 350 2700 1

Why SA 516 Gr. 60 for Pressure Vessel Applications?

SA 516 Gr. 60 (ASME SA516 Grade 60) is a carbon steel pressure vessel plate specified for moderate- and lower-temperature service where improved notch toughness is required. With a tensile strength range of 415–550 MPa (60–80 ksi) and a minimum yield strength of 220 MPa (32 ksi), it is widely used in:

  • Oil and gas pressure vessels — separators, scrubbers, and process drums operating at moderate pressures
  • Boiler drums and components — steam generation equipment requiring reliable weldability
  • Heat exchanger shells — tube sheets and channel sections in petrochemical service
  • Storage tanks — atmospheric and low-pressure storage for hydrocarbons and chemicals
  • Sour service equipment — H₂S-containing environments where NACE MR0175 compliance is mandatory

The fully killed, fine austenitic grain practice specified for this order ensures uniform mechanical properties, superior low-temperature toughness, and consistent weldability — all essential for pressure-retaining equipment operating in demanding oil and gas environments.

Impact Testing at -29°C: Ensuring Low-Temperature Toughness

All plates were Charpy V-notch impact tested at -29°C in accordance with SA-370, verifying that the material retains sufficient toughness at sub-zero temperatures. This is critical for pressure vessels operating in cold climates or cryogenic-adjacent service conditions, where brittle fracture is a primary design concern.

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Compliance for Sour Service

The plates comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, the international standard for materials used in H₂S-containing environments. This compliance ensures resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) — failure modes that can cause catastrophic equipment failure in sour oil and gas service. Hardness controls and chemistry limits were applied during production to meet the 22 HRC maximum hardness requirement specified by NACE MR0175.

EN10204 Type 3.1 Material Certification

Each plate was delivered with an EN10204 Type 3.1 material test certificate (MTC), issued by the manufacturer’s authorized inspection representative. The MTC documents the actual chemical composition and mechanical properties of each heat, providing full traceability from steelmaking to final delivery. Third-party inspection and EN10204 Type 3.2 certification are available upon request for additional project compliance.
